I like walking alone in cities, returning home with an armful of roses or a new perfume, peaches, plums, pears, a new egg-blue dress folded two times in a crisp white bag or an elegant fountain pen. I love the golden Bodleian and the quiet circle of the Radcliffe Camera. Places I’ll share: Singapore, Oxford, the Amalfi coast, Hanoi, Vienna, Kyoto.
People: friends and family and teachers; the heros: Amartya Sen, John Rawls, Edward Said, Joseph Stiglitz, Martha Nussbaum, among others. I also greatly admire people like Isak Dinesen, the sort of women who could do pretty well anything they put their mind to, hunting tigers, bewitching men, throwing elegant dinner parties, winning literary fame, raising small children.
