Elsewhere: Links, people dear to me, other places, travel tales, bits of memory.

I am pretty much a fluffette (add to that an odd scrooge streak, and you get a weird mix), and I like walking alone in cities, returning home with an armful of books and roses or a new perfume, peaches, plums, pears, an egg-blue dress folded two times in a crisp white bag. I love the golden Bodleian and the quiet circle of the Radcliffe Camera. Places I’ll share: Singapore, Oxford, the Amalfi coast, Providence, Hanoi, Vienna, Kyoto.

People: friends and family and teachers; the heros: Amartya Sen, Ruth Simmons, John Rawls, Goh Keng Swee, Edward Said, Joseph Stiglitz, Martha Nussbaum, among others. I also greatly admire people like Isak Dinesen, the sort of women who could do pretty well anything they put their mind to, hunting tigers, bewitching men, throwing elegant dinner parties, winning literary fame, raising small children.
